Introduction
CDPQS is a small program which will get your CD-ROM player to
start playing a CD Audio disc. It is so simple to use, even a
child can use it. However, in order to use it at all, you have
to have the following:
- A IBM Compatible computer
- A CD-ROM drive capable of audio output
- MSCDEX v2.1 or later
You must also set up CDPQS so that it can find your CD-ROM drive.
This is very simple to do. At the DOS command prompt, type
CDPSETUP
and you will be greeted with a question. After you answer it,
you are then ready to run CDPQS!
The Question
This is a very simple question to answer, but one that might give
some folks a bit of trouble. In order for CDPQS to access your
drive, it must know what drive letter your drive is.
However, things are done a bit differently. Let us say that you
have a floppy drive on your computer. It is probably drive 'A'.
But did you know that it is really drive '0'? The same goes if
you have a hard drive. Usually a hard drive is drive 'C', but
MS-DOS considers it to be drive '2'. Adds to some confusion,
huh?
On my computer, my CD-ROM drive is drive 'D'. So when I run
CDPSETUP, and it asks what drive my CD-ROM is, I answer '3'.
Don't worry. If you do not know what drive your CD-ROM is, just
do this.... run CDPSETUP and tell it drive 3. Then run CDPQS.
If it does not work, run CDPSETUP again and tell it drive 4.
There are a maximum of 26 drives allowed on an IBM, so it should
not take you too long to find it!
Running CDPQS
Once you have run CDPSETUP, you can then run CDPQS. However,
before you do, make sure there is a CD Audio disc in the drive.
CDPQS will run and will print some user information. It will
then report back the lowest and highest track numbers on your
disc.
You will be asked to enter the lowest and highest track numbers
you want to hear.
For example, let's say that the disc you put in has tracks 1
through 14. You want to listen to tracks 5 through 9. When
CDPQS asks for the lowest track number, just enter 5, and 9 for
the highest. CDPQS will play tracks 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
If you only want to listen to one track, say for example track 6,
enter 6 as the lowest and highest track numbers.
2
Once you have done this, CDPQS will start playing the music and
will dump you back to the DOS prompt. Now you can sit back and
enjoy music while computing!
User Notes
CDPQS was written in Turbo C++. It was written using a Sony CDU
510 CD-ROM drive, MSCDEX v 2.1, MS-DOS 5.0, and an 8088 IBM Com
patible computer.
CDPQS should work correctly with ANY CD-ROM drive, provided the
driver program manufacturer has stuck with the Microsoft CD ROM
Extensions Device Driver specifications. CDPQS does not talk to
the drive, like some drive specific programs do, but talks to the
CD-ROM extensions which in turn talks with the drive. This makes
for a more compatible program. If, after you have tried every
thing you know of to get the program running, and it still does
not work correctly then WRITE US A LETTER! We want to know!
Please include the following information to us in your letter:
- a printed copy of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
- a printed copy of your CONFIG.SYS file
- what version of MSCDEX you are running
We will try our darndest to help you get the program running.
